THE New South Wales Rugby Union say a controversial loan made to former employee Jim Williams to help pay his mortgage did not come from a taxpayer-funded indigenous education program.
Reports have emerged that former Wallabies captain Nick Farr-Jones, in his former role as NSWRU chairman, approved a loan of $56,000 to Williams last year at a time when Williams was under severe financial stress.
According to Fairfax, the money was drawn from Federal Government funds provided to NSWRU for the Learn, Earn, Legend initiative - a program that assists indigenous youth with schooling and post-education pathways.
Williams, who was employed by NSWRU to run their Live, Earn, Legend program, approached long-serving NSWRU official Bruce Worboys last August seeking financial help. Farr-Jones admitted he approved “a short-term loan” for Williams without getting approval from the NSWRU board.
