Sanzaar defends decision to appoint South African Jaco Peyper as referee for Super Rugby final
August 1, 2017
GOVERNING body SANZAAR has defended its decision to appoint South African referee Jaco Peyper to control the Super Rugby final between the Lions and Crusaders in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The move came despite Kiwi media calls to appoint a “neutral” referee — probably Australia’s Angus Gardner — to handle the match between the New Zealand and South African heavyweights.
Peyper handled last weekend’s semi-final between the Lions and Hurricanes and drew the ire of New Zealanders for his controversial sin-binning of Hurricanes five-eighth Beauden Barrett at a crucial point in the Lions’ 39-29 comeback win.
Announcing Peyper’s appointment for the final on Tuesday, SANZAAR CEO Andy Marinos addressed the issue, saying he was the best referee and it followed policy of the past two years that such appointments be “merit-based”.
He pointed out the policy meant that New Zealand referee Glenn Jackson controlled last year’s final in Wellington, when the Hurricanes beat the Lions.
“SANZAAR stands behind the policy and believes the best referees should be available to officiate the best matches,” said Marinos.
The assistant referees for the final will be Jackson and South African Marius van der Westhuizen with South Africa’s Marius Jonker as television match official.

Looks like we know who's fault it is if the Crusaders lose on Saturday, could be the second time this year that the Crusaders lose to Lions![]()

Why can't there be a neutral ref ? We have 3 countries in this competition.
Prephrased - 2 successfully countries in this competition![]()
Neutral ref should have been appointed. Peyper might be the best according to their kpi's but he's still a strutting, "look at me" poser and is open to home town crowd influence. I hope the Crusaders tear them a new one.

they are quick to criticise when we rag on the refs, but if the shoe is on the other foot....

Actually, I reckon the Japanese ref (Kubo) is darn good. Maybe he doesn't have the experience, but you get experience by reffing the top matches.
Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
I'm wondering whether the Lions have got into the mindset of "You have to lose a grand final to win one," dwelling on the fact that because they gave up home ground advantage last year, they might be thinking that, "this is our year" after that mistake. Could they be guilty thinking it's their turn for a fairy-tale ending? That it's fait accompli?
This is why I reckon the Crusaders will win, I think they're tired of being the "fairy-tale ending" twice now, once each for the Reds and Waratahs. They haven't had a title for a while, so unless the Lions tour stalemate has temporarily taken the wind out of NZ rugby, they'll be seeing this as a real opportunity to get back to where they believe they rightfully belong after those two narrow losses. And quite a storied victory it would be, in front of a partisan Ellis Park full house.
Still, wouldn't mind seeing the Lions win, been a long time since Francois and the boys got the inaugural Super 10 title in 1993.

If the Lions win it, Jaco Peyper will never be able to enter New Zealand again.

Peyper refereed the Lions v 'canes match. No hullabaloo when that was announced.
Best ref gets The Final. Any ref in televised matches simply referees what's in front of them, regardless of what team is playing.
Imagine the responses from quite a few on this site if Gus Gardner got the appointment, being the highest ranked ref not from NZ or SA.
EDIT: From rugby365:
Peyper is the SANZAAR's selection committee's choice as the best Super Rugby referee of 2017 and also the choice of each of the coaches of the teams involved, the Lions and the Crusaders.

The bias really showed when he gave the Red Card![]()
I thought he looked pretty reluctant to go red, almost apologising. He asked the TMO "are you thinking red then?" or similar. On first glance it looked very bad but also looked like there was no intent - pretty much accidental. Havili was not hurt badly, the offending player came off worse actually. Watching live, I thought a yellow was OK. I wondered whether all the noise about Peyper getting the gig affected his judgement of the situation. Should not have been in that position.
