Rebels star Amanaki Mafi during the Super Rugby match against the Highlanders at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium.
Melbourne Rebels rugby player Amanaki Mafi is in police custody in Dunedin and is set to face charges following an alleged assault on team-mate Lopeti Timani.
The alleged assault occurred after the visitors lost 43-37 loss to the Highlanders in Dunedin on Saturday.
Rugby Australia and the Melbourne Rebels said in a statement they were aware of an altercation between the two players, and confirmed Mafi remained in custody on Sunday night. They were unable to make further comment.
A police spokeswoman told foxsports.com.au that a "man has been charged with injuring with intent to injure following an alleged assault in South Dunedin last night" and was due to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Monday.
"The alleged victim... received moderate injuries following the incident. He did not require hospitalisation."

another revenue source for the Rebels $30,000 in the bank - as long as fifty shades doesn't take his usual ten percent
The fine is going to a charity for this very reason, and I don`t mean RA or Clyne or Clarke.
The images are pretty nasty, he can barely see out of either eye they were so swollen up, must have landed a few really good ones.

'The Melbourne Rebels have handed down the maximum penalty of $15,000 on Amanaki Mafi and Lopeti Timani, the two players involved in the incident in Dunedin on Saturday night, as new information began to emerge of Mafi being involved in another altercation in Cape Town in April.
The Rebels have confirmed there was an incident at a nightclub in Cape Town during Melbourne’s two-match South African team where he assaulted another teammate who was attempting to bring Mafi into line at a nightclub. The incident was handled in-house by team director Tony Thorpe, the former All Black team manager, who decided to attempt to counsel Mafi.'
So one dickhead punches out two team mates in the last 12 months and cops the exact same punishment as the victim/ 1st time offender.. what a load of shit. This is why the RA and Rebels are such cluster fucks, they can't even deal with internal issues consistently without favouritism.
That’s our Australian rugby player of the year you are talking about.
Generally speaking you aren’t learning much if your lips are moving!!!
