Pilbara Rugby League started with a bang at the weekend with a double header at Bulgarra Oval in Karratha .The two matches drew a big crowd with more people watching than at the AFL next door.
Both matches were one-sided with reigning premiers Wickham Wasps taking the long drive home with their tails between their legs, losing 56-6 to the Karratha Broncos. In the nights second match the Karratha Roosters made sure the Port Hedland Cougars had something to think about with a 32-10 victory.
The double header was a combined effort between the Broncos and the Roosters in an effort to draw a big crowd. Broncos President Rick Howard said it was a success with good attendance at both matches, “Unfortunately the crowd dwindled a bit towards the end of the second match but we got a lot of comments saying it was a great idea.” He said there wouldn’t be an opportunity for another double header this season but there was scope for more next year.
As for the rest of the season, the Bronco’s look the team to beat with Rooster’s John O’Connell saying they looked sharp at the weekend. “They are looking a polished outfit, with some sharp moves and some new players.” Dale ‘Rastaman’ Alfred played really well for us on the weekend and we are hoping to finish in the top two at the end of the season.”
Rick Howard said that it was hard to tell which team was the standout as none were at full strength yet. “It will be easier to judge after the next few matches.” He said.
