The CA Brumbies have signed promising outside back Peter Betham for two years.
The former Australian Schoolboys and Australian Under 19’s representative was drafted into the NSW Academy for 2007, representing NSW A on four occasions, after graduating from renowned rugby nursery, St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill, in 2006.
Betham, who is studying American history at Sydney University, says he’s looking forward to being part of a full-time program with the CA Brumbies.
“This is an excellent opportunity for me to develop my game in what is regarded as the best rugby program in the world,” he said. “It’s a great chance to learn alongside some of the best players in Australian rugby like Stirling Mortlock, Julian Huxley, Mark Gerrard, Clyde Rathbone and Adam Ashley-Cooper.”
Head coach Laurie Fisher says Betham is an excellent prospect for the CA Brumbies.
“Peter’s been a strong performer at Schoolboy and Under 19 level,” he said. “He’s a player with good size and athleticism and we’re looking forward to him developing his game with us over the next two seasons.”
Brumbies Rugby CEO Andrew Fagan says Betham’s signing continues the CA Brumbies’ strong preparation for 2008.
“It’s a tremendous accolade for the Brumbies program that in addition to retaining the vast majority of our players from last season and attracting existing Super 14 stars like Mitchell Chapman and Josh Holmes, we can also attract some of the best young talent in Australian rugby like Peter Betham and Matt Toomua,” he said.
“We’re excited to have Peter on board for the next two seasons. He’s shown what a tremendous talent he is at the junior representative levels and we’re looking forward to him being part of the Brumbies program and hopefully developing into a Super 14 player.”
