FRANCE is the home of haute cuisine but Fiji's World Cup rugby squad, taking no chances, will fuel its campaign with homegrown taro and sweet potato.
The Fiji Times reports today that a sponsor has arranged to fly several weeks' supply of the root vegetables - staples of the Fijian diet - to France to ensure players don't miss home comforts.
"We want something that we are familiar with," said coach Ili Tabua. "Besides, we want to maintain weight and food is an area that will help us in that regard."
Fiji team management was concerned it might not be able to find Pacific delicacies in France, so arranged with an air freight company to carry them among the team's baggage.
"We have variations in the diet of the players during our (World Cup) camp," said Tabua.
"They consume taro and it's good."
