Staniforth set to fly home
From Jim Morton in Montpellier, France
September 24, 2007
AUSTRALIA fears it may need to call for a second Rugby World Cup replacement in a fortnight after Scott Staniforth suffered a serious shoulder injury during the 55-12 win against Fiji overnight.
Staniforth badly injured his right shoulder in a friendly-fire collision as he enjoyed his first touch of the ball after being sent on as a replacement at Stade de la Mosson.
He was hit by fellow centre Adam Ashley-Cooper, who misread an inside pass, and he stayed down for several minutes receiving treatment from team medic Martin Raftery. (Unfortunately it wasn't the only time ACC misread or mistimed/ran a play either, very obvious he hadn't played or trained there enough yet. Probably a good argument for Mortlock to come from the bench against Canada to give ACC some more time there. Could be invaluable come Finals.)
Staniforth rejoined the action but for only a couple of phases before he was replaced in the 67th minute.
He had joined the fray midway through the second half when young fly-half Berrick Barnes limped off with a corked thigh while Australia was leading 38-12.
Wallabies coach John Connolly expected to know Staniforth's fate tomorrow morning, after scans on his A/C joint.
The Western Force utility, 29, may become the second back sent home after Mark Gerrard's tournament ended with a first-match knee injury against Japan.
Matt Giteau, who bagged 27 points, including two tries, in a man-of-the-match performance, switched from inside centre to five-eighth then back to inside centre in five minutes as Julian Huxley replaced Staniforth.
Huxley chimed in well at No.10 to set up a late try to Stephen Hoiles as the Wallabies crossed three times in the final 10 minutes.
Reserve halfback Sam Cordingley finished with a knee injury, but Connolly expected both he and Barnes to be fit for the side’s final Pool B match, against Canada in Bordeaux, this weekend.
The versatile Huxley looms as a potential starter at inside centre against the Canucks, while Ryan Cross and Morgan Turinui would be among possible replacements to consider.

That was a real nasty knock that spanner took....bloody shame!
Just happy to be here
Although with not the same long term damage apparently, the other shocker was Cordingley's knee into the top of Rauluni's head
Wouldn't surprise me if Stanners has done a collar bone the way ACC's knee ploughed into the top of his shoulder.

awww... crap![]()
Ooohhh Crap.
A collar bone crack would be better than AC problems.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
Yeah true.

"Remember lads, rugby is a team game; all 14 of you make sure you pass the ball to Giteau."
it looked serious enough to make me shudder!
I really feel for him as he is one of the unsung heroes of that squad, and deserves his time in the sun.
his replacements arent half bad though. Im hoping Crossie gets the nod as he is just itching to get over there!
Nah, not Cross, another Mungo is available though. Get Timtam over there Stat! Give him a practice game versus Canadia and he will be fine for the quarters and beyond.

Have to admit, first sight made me think collar-bone. Almost hoping it is now, compared to some of the alternatives.
Staniforth set for quick recovery

September 24, 2007 AUSTRALIA'S concerns over Scott Staniforth have eased with the three-quarter expected to recover quickly from a shoulder injury.
Staniforth played just three minutes in Australia's 55-12 win over Fiji in Montpellier after colliding with fellow centre Adam Ashley-Cooper with his first touch of the ball.
At first there were fears the 29-year-old had suffered a serious injury to his A/C joint and the Wallabies may have to call for their second replacement back in a fortnight.
But the shoulder has improved and it's believed the damage is bad bruising to the bone and he could even be available to play Canada in Saturday's final pool match. Staniforth will have an MRI scan in Montpellier.
No replacements have been put on standby in an encouraging sign for the Western Force utility who is important to the balance of Australia's bench.
Staniforth is the main back-up to Matt Giteau at inside centre while his ability to cover wing has him in the Wallabies top 22.
With Giteau to be rested against Canada, Julian Huxley looms as the likely cover for Staniforth at No.12 if he can't play in Bordeaux.
That reshuffle could give fullback Chris Latham his wish to continue playing rather than be sidelined ahead of a likely quarter-final against England.
