BROADCASTER Alan Jones has announced he will be applying for the Australia rugby union coaching position.
Jones told a press conference that discussions with Queensland Rugby Union chairman Peter Lewis had swayed him to become a candidate for the head coach position vacated by John Connolly.
He said he would not expect to be appointed for a four-year term to take in the next Rugby World Cup cycle and believed the position should be reviewed every 12 months.
Jones said he believed the style of rugby played by the Wallabies and throughout Australia needed to be overhauled and that was demonstrated by bottom of the table finishes by Queensland and NSW in the Super 14 competition and Australia's elimination in the quarter-finals of the 2007 World Cup.
He said the national coach had a "massive obligation" to show the game could be played in an entertaining way to bring crowds through the gate.
"That's been our undoing. We need to release our prodigious talent out wide," he said. "I'm responding to the call for change."

I hope hes not serious about the fact that rugby "Style" needs to be overhauled because NSW and QLD did poorly in Super14...
Australia only has 4 teams in Super14 as opposed to SA and NZ with 5 each. we have a smaller pool of players to select from and have to compete against 3 other football codes for funding, players and fans. Those facts alone would be considered major factors in our performance in general - Since the super series began Australia has only won 2 titles anyway, 2002 was the only year we had 2 teams in the finals.
Yes our scrummagers are just not big enough, (someone call Rodzilla!!) and they got pummelled at the breakdown against england
Australia lost the game by 2 points, yet could have won if Capt Insano had slotted that last penalty.
I think Rugby in Australia should be focussing on the grassroots more than STYLE of play. I for one like the way we play.
the ARC proved that there a lot of talented players out there ready to step up, lets give them the opportunity. we have 4 years to develop a great team, A big shake up in style i think might not be the answer.
he might be a good coach but they cant take a risk this big. he might be good at an assistant role but he cant be head coach when he hasnt coached for so long.
yes Jones as something to give Rugby but not as number 1
heres a video report from the same site
