One of my AFL loving work colleagues tonight during a discussion re which sports are/aren't in the Olympics.
"Weren't they trying to get Footy into the Olympics?"
Me - after I'd stopped laughing "Maybe Jason, but who would the other teams be?"
After a pause for thought, "Yeah I think that was the problem. That's why they are trying to get all the other countries to play Footy"
Dead set! He really said that.![]()

2 things. Unfortunately, the AFL does have international comps, but probably of Aussies that are OS. Also, there is "Football" in this Olympics, but of course its the soccer version.

There is a rule regarding Olympic sports that they must be played in a certain number of countries. Can't remember how many countries have to play, though, and I think the number is less for Winter Olympic sports.
A few of the sports discontinued from the Olympics (probably for that reason) include: baseball, softball, tug-of-war, cricket, croquet, lacrosse, polo and, of course, rugby!
I know when the games were in Atlanta (1996?) the Merkins were talking about getting American Football in as a demonstration sport.
what makes me smile is signing an international quality 12 (for more than a years) who wants to run between defenders and then wants to pass the ball just as he draws two or three defenders
