A glance at his Wikipedia page says he took over in early 2013 (but Wikipedia isn't always right)

If that's true though he was in the front office to re-sign Folau

Not quite. Folau signed about a month before Pulver was appointed.

If this is the start of a move away from top ups, that's all well and good. But there needs to be some sort of transition and a lead-in time so it doesn't come as a shock to any of the players (or their managers).

Presumably the RUPA would want to be involved in any changeover too.

I don't know that super rugby form counts for much, Cliff Paul also plays pretty well at that level, but is a passenger against NZ & ZA

Agents of players have sullied the game IMHO. They have been able to take the focus of the player away from the jersey and allegiance to your country to money. RUPA too don't care if Wallabies win Lose or Draw, they still get their payments, still influence players.

The result is Poor on-field performances leading to less attendances, less sponsorship, less money.

They wont lose the top ups as long as their are money hungry mercenaries like Israel Folau who put bums on seats and we cant allow them to go to League or Tiddlywinks - or what ever he tries to get a game with next.

Maybe the top ups should be based on how the WWE work with their "Sports Entertainers". Who ever sells the most merchandise and has the most twitter and facebook followers gets the most top ups.

But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Why should Mowen not get a commensurate fee for running out in the green and gold with the captain's armband on when the Palu's of the world have been the recipient of same for sitting on the sidelines, or, a special dispensation is given to Folau to entice him to stay in rugby longer than the 5 minutes he has been here.

The top up system is entirely subjective and is deeply flawed. That money should be given to the clubs as a bulk fee so they can make a decision on their own playing rosters who is deserving of same and who they could attract/sign with that extra contract money.

That may put on us an equal footing with the eastern staters though, so that's probably considered blasphemy at rugby HQ.

Mowen should tell the ARU to get nicked and go and play in France. It may wake them up to the absurdity of the top up system.

Not a bad idea herb, but I'd prefer to do away with top ups and increase match payments and institute bonuses. Imagine how much better the team would play when you not only get a pay cut for sitting in the stands but also get a bonus for scoring tries, making tackles and winning games.

i dunno about the "statistics" based approach to payments. Definitely payment for attending matches, tours, training, training camps etc. this will keep all the players who take part in the wallabies, whether they are match day or not, paid fairly. It also allows you to not pay players who do not get into the squad.

but the statistics is too open for interpretation, have you heard of the DRS debarcle?

The next thing to think about is how to pay players who get injured as a result of playing for the wallabies...

It depends what 'statistics' you choose really, surely a bonus for a win is pretty easy to apply fairly...possibly even grade those bonuses based upon the IRB ranking of the opponent.

Tries scored might be a vexed one, but since the powers that be want attacking rugby maybe a team bonus for four tries and a small individual bonus for scoring one. (not sure that that mightn't be counter productive though)

the team bonuses i can understand, however, being a team sport, i cannot ever agree with individual bonuses for a game.

IF you are the Captain - Wouldn't it be reasonable to expect to be the highest paid player?
