How long did you leave it on for coach and how high was the temp?

Generally speaking you aren’t learning much if your lips are moving!!!
On 4 burner hooded BBQ, I had one side with both burners on low (grill side), and sat the chook on the other side near centre (where it was hottest) - gave it a 1/4 turn every 20 minutes. Roasted and rotissieried (sp?)
On a good barbie with no drafts, you should be able to just have the hotplate burners on low with the chook on the can on the plate, this way the beer boils and steams teh chook on teh inside while being roasted from teh outside, should be fast then - depends on your babrie, best bet is to keep an eye on it first time.
