Given the distance the competition would then cover you imagine a bye week or two thrown in

Each country woulsd play the same number of games. two games against each of three opponents rather than three games against each of two opponents.

There would need to be more competition rounds though. SA could get their commitment out of the way early in the same way that they have arranged for 2011

No, two games a week instead of one = six match weeks instead of nine. Throw in a couple of bye weeks and it's still shorter.

Works out pretty easy really, same as the old home nations tournament.

Just have 3 bledisloe games on top if you want to play the blackness more times.

Just so long as it is NZ or someone else that has to do any sequences like, say:
    SA in SA
    Aus in NZ
    Arg in Arg
    SA in NZ
    Aus in Aus
    Arg in NZ

Try doing the collective schedule around everyone's travel being in tours.

this is the best draw i can come up with...

    week1
    ARG SA
    NZ AUS
    week2
    bye
    week3
    SA ARG
    AUS NZ
    week4
    SA NZ
    AUS ARG
    week5
    bye
    week6
    AUS SA
    ARG NZ
    week7
    NZ SA
    ARG AUS
    week8
    bye
    week9
    NZ ARG
    SA AUS

    assumptions for simplification only
    1) all Aus games played on east coast
    2) distances rounded off to nearest 1000km
    3) 9 week schedule

final dist travelled for each team =
    Aus 34000
    SA 28000
    NZ 30000
    ARG 36000

Alternatively they might do a couple of split rounds so that they ensure at least one game each week.
