Government. Import duties. and we have a tax that was meant to replace other taxes. But just got added on.

People have played up Australia & NZ being the most isolated nations on the planet. So we pay more.
Or those of us who are not too silly to purchase online and limit transactions to under $1000

Not withstanding we get income taxed at a massively high rate. But that's another issue.

I've tested this, and it was about the same price to buy a single book from e.g. Amazon in the UK and ship it over as it is to buy the book here from Dymocks.

Economies of scale (population of 250m versus population of 22m)? Plus our remoteness both internally and from the rest of the world? Plus only a small number of retailers so lack of competition to keep prices down? Plus too much wealth in the hands of those who buy such products (i.e. no sense of value for money as money is no object)?

We have a very high cost of living in Oz for pretty much everything it seems, except in the case of our most scarce resource - water. That, in my opinion, is far, far too cheap!

We just elected a guy who will soon have us in the same boat as you. I better save an extra $200 for my tablet or buy it soon.

I wouldn't piss on Gerry Harvey if he was on fire

What consumers are doing to Gerry Harvey at the moment is the same as he did to Australian manufacturing 20ish years ago.

I've used Amazon (US) frequently over the years, for books either because they are cheaper or they can't be found here in Australia. Also for Sunglasses where the retailer here in Oz charges $390 for a pair yet Amazon only $110

If you use The Book Depository site, they don't charge for delivery to Oz so they are often even cheaper than Amazon!

I combine shipping. Or the book depository.com generally has free shipping. Heaps cheaper

I buy upwards of 10 books at a time though

It's a conspiracy. I found a few bargain books on fishpond. A few weeks after receiving one book, I got an email from fishpond telling me how I could sell it on fishpond!

Anyone in the market for sports shoes or equipment of any description, including sports clothing and casual clothing (surf/skate/sports) would do well to check out www.eastbay.com as it is great.
Shoes are $50-100 cheaper than Australia (including heaps of shoes not available here), surf tshirts that retail for $55-60 in Aust are $15-25...!
Usually delivers to Perth in under a week too!
