The ball had come to rest in the field of play. This type of play only results in our feed when the ball is caught whilst in touch. the spirit of the law is something like 'the ball is likely to go out anyway, you are simply playing at the ball to ensure it does so. just like a player in touch may play at the ball to prevent it going out in that situation. there is an inherent balance to the rule when applied this way that is lost if you allow what Huxley did (unless you allow in-touch players to retrieve the ball from touch)
