Speaking of upgrading stadiums. Can anybody see any "heritage" value in that old stand at MES? I sure bloody can't.
Those arched entrance gates are a different story. Impressive and certainly worth retaining.
Were rugby supporters, we don't care about East Perth Football Club. And anyway, if they gave a crap about the ground they wouldn't have shifted grounds. Its a retangular ground now (no offence B&B)
Heritage value has nothing to do with the beauty of a structure but the historical value of it. I don't know how many WA heroes of the past changed in those changerooms, nor do I care, but I am not interested in messing with heritage listing, once we start doing that we are standing on a slippery slope.
That being said, the heritage value can be preserved creatively by making the original rooms part of a bigger structure somehow!

Matter of opinion, GIGGS. Don't know if that's yours or the people appointed to tell us what we should consider of value. On the stand I don't share it. The beautiful old stands at North Sydney Oval & Sydney Cricket Ground are another story - just like the turnstile gates at "Perth Oval." The way the MCG has changed over the years didn't worry much about past heroes in the change rooms or the old structures.
The most common way heritage sites are preserved, where there is a public interest in development, is by preserving the facade of the building. In this case I think making a feature of those old gates is the best way to go.
Gut the stand and refurbish the insides, then build around the original stand in any refurbishment of the ground as a whole
I did the MCG tour a year or so ago around Commonwealth Games time and it was stated that "there is not one single brick left in the MCG that was there when they host the Olympic Games" Not sure of the year but TLH could probably tell us, he was well truley drinking age when it was on!

I could be a total nerd and tell you it was 1956...
Don't worry swee, i knew that as well
Mate we've got trivia night sewn up then!
All I need to know about the MCG's historical years are these 14 little rippers - 1902, 1903, 1910, 1917, 1919, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1935, 1936, 1953, 1958 and 1990.
Well it may just be worth taking a note of these![]()
