With team 2 to 6 on 43 down to 40 competition points (basically only bonus points berween them) - then a gap between 6th and 7th of 6 point - I don't think it is rewarding mediocrity to have a top 6 - a top 8 would do that.

regarding the question about a longer season and injuries - I beleive it is contemplated that the playing squads wold have to be increased to cater for the longer season and allow for player rotation.

As I mentioned in the other thread with the poll, another way to look at it, considering Jasper's point on the ladder spread, is that it REWARDS success by giving 1st and 2nd a second shot or a week off.

    Week 1. "Match A" 3rd v 6th & "Match B" 4th v 5th, 1st & 2nd Bye.

    Week 2. "Match C" 1st v Winner Match A & "Match D" 2nd v Winner Match B

Week 3. Winner Match C v Winner D. (Hosted by the highest in Minor Premiership)

They would probably allow bigger player lists.

Also in a longer season I think teams would be more willing to rotate, rest, or start on the bench, players that are tired or have minor injuries. With most players at full strength and getting the rest they need it may actually reduce the number of injuries.
