If you think most working people are in favour, think again. Try a job where you start @ 5am and work a 12 hour shift. These shifts are more common in WA than elsewhere. It is not easy to ajust from rising @ 03:45 to rising @ 02:45. There are REAL health & safety implications. Not simply leisure time issues.
It seems to me that those working in office-based, metro occupations are the main whiners. They are the people who can most easily ajust their working times.

On the other hand, no DLS here puts us 3 hours behind the ES in summer so some office workers (me being one!) do suffer a tad when we're in teleconferences with them that start at 8am EDST, or earlier!
I know it's nothing like as disruptive as having DLS would be for you guys who work 12hr shifts, but I just wanted to highlight that there are work-related arguments both ways.
That problem is easily solved. Ring them at our time 5pm. Sorts out the early morning phones calls, trust me.
Exactly right. I have to get up an hour or two earlier to get to work but don't get it back at the other end of the day. So it's lose lose. If we had DLS here, I would benefit from an extra hour of daylight at a time that I can use it - i.e. after I have left work for the day.
There are valid arguments on either side, whichever way you look at it. But, it's all academic for at least the next 10 years I reckon.
For me, not that often thankfully. But for others I know - who have staff to manage in NSW or Vic - it's very frequent. I agree that most decent managers should be flexible, and I'm sure many try to be. But often it's the business needs that dictate things, not individuals. The WA business day can't be neglected so we can't have everyone buggering off early because they have had to start early to cater for ES business hours.
All of that said, we are only talking about an hour here, so it's not the end of the world by any means! It's just another thread in this very thread-ful annual debate
