Ohhhh - that's a tough one - there are many, many contenders for that title ;-p
THE conspiracy theories have started: Uruguayan TV station Tenfield says allegations Luis Suarez bit an Italian player is ‘another 1966 plot by the English media’. Uruguay’s World Cup victory over Italy, which saw them qualify for the final 16 stage of the tournament, has been over shadowed by shocking TV footage of Suarez appearing to bite the left shoulder of Giorgio Chiellini.
While the world has united in its condemnation of the Liverpool striker, who has bitten opponents on two previous occasions, he has found some backing from his native country.
Uruguay finished second in Group D ahead of England who finished bottom and as such, TV channel Tenfield, has accused the British media of launching an attack on Suarez in order to distract attention from their own dismal campaign.
“In the TV replay, as viewed in the press area, it appears that Luisito’s face comes in contact with Chiellini without it being clear whether he bites him as was claimed by those — especially the English — who were keen to play down Uruguay’s victory,” says the Tenfield report.
“In our view the TV picture is not clear as to whether or not Suarez bites the shoulder of the Italian defender.
“Note how Suárez stumbles after jumping for the ball and how his face hits the shoulder of the Italian player.
“British reporters, in the press conference, asked Oscar Tabarez three times asked about the incident, saying that: ‘Suarez bit Chiellini.’
“Their intention was FIFA should intervene and expel Luisito from the World Cup.
“It would be good if these Englishmen, who are concerned to have Suarez suspended, remember how they won the World Cup in 1966 with a ball which was not a goal.”
Uruguay were dumped out of the ‘66 World Cup in the quarter-finals by West Germany.
The match was overshadowed by English referee Jim Finney who sent two Uruguayan players off as well as ‘overlooking” a hand ball that would have given them a goal.
Finney’s actions, together with those of German referee Rudolf Kreitlein (who dismissed an Argentine player in their quarter-final against England) prompted a South American conspiracy theory that they had been the victims of a European plot.
FIFA has since charged Suarez who now faces a lengthy ban.
Earlier today FIFA said that its disciplinary committee has opened proceedings and if Suarez is found guilty he faces up to 24 months on the sideline.
FIFA asked the team to present evidence by 5pm Wednesday and a decision must be published before Saturday, when Uruguay play Colombia in a round-of-16 match.
