I blame the demise of the ARC for all this bollocks! A good harty local comp where everyone got to have run around in the fresh air and sunshine took the tension away from everybody. Now there isnt really anything to focus on after the end of competition, for this reason everyone is getting a tad testy and with all the exitement and anticipation of Christmas its all coming to a head....
Time out and go to the thinking chair!

Merry Christmas everyone! I'll be out there watching for the big fellah on the sled during my nightshift tonight...

    Mitchell faces coaching review

    Mitchell faces coaching review

    Nick Taylor

    December 24, 2008 11:00am

WESTERN Force has placed unexplained restrictions on head coach John Mitchell, raising questions about his long term future with the club.

The restrictions ban Mitchell from leading training. It has been taken by his assistants John Mulvihill and Tom Fearn.

Concerns among players and staff about Mitchell's no-nonsense coaching style and attitude were raised during last season's Super 14 and at one-to-one meetings Mitchell had with the players at the end of the tournament.

Chief executive Greg Harris has already weakened Mitchell's grip with the introduction of a structure that gives assistant coaches and senior players more input into the side.

Harris will chair a match committee of assistants Mulvihill and Fearn, strength and conditioning coach Hayden Masters, captain Nathan Sharpe vice-captain Matt Giteau and other senior players.

Mitchell 's manager John Fordham said the coach remained 'willing and available' to discuss issues aimed at improving the Force’s performance, standing and reputation and its commitment to the success of the Wallabies.

"To this end, John has reaffirmed this ongoing commitment to the senior management and to the board of the Western Force, through its chairman Geoff Stooke, emphasising his preparedness to work closely with the organisation, its coaching staff and players to achieve an optimum result for the football club ," Fordham said.

if the 35 contracted western force players were the crew of a ship. mitch would be the captain. his word would be law. if they had a problem with it. they were free to walk the plank.

they might not be happy with all his methods. but i think that the team's improvement shows that his methods do work. regardless of what said methods are.

    don't borrow trouble jargs.

even though thats what it would appear has happened.
at least rugbywa were proactive enough to take the steps that they have before it got to the stage of staff walking out, or refusing to have anything to do with other staff members.

If the restrictions being placed on John Mitchell are correct as reported in the Nick Taylor article it has already reached the stage of staff members not speaking to each other

    fair cop.

but the mediation process has begun. all we can do now is be hopeful that there is a positive resolution for all parties involved that enables them to get on with their jobs. i dont care if they are friends. work is work. whether it be bricklaying or super 14 rugby, i dont care if they talk to each other after they clock off everyday. as long as they can work together

Just as long as that mediation ends up with John Mitchell as head coach with his position just as strong as it has been for the first three seasons.

I'm not a big fan of that idea. Sorry to any Mulvihill supporters but I don't think he really showed he had the mettle when he was in charge of the Perth Spirit. Arguably the most talent/depth of the 8 teams and never did as well as they should've. I think if the Force wants to keep going until it is more sustainable player wise we would need another big name coach.

    Thanks bg, followed your advice and actually stayed awake most of night;

getting back on track - great leaders are respected but not neccesarily liked- its definately not a good thing for a coach tp not be too 'matey' with the playing group. Its almost as if there is a line between being a being one of the boys and being coach - there has to be that bit of aloofness.

Its fine to be one of the boys, but respect has to be maintained.

Coaches make tough calls that can really test 'friendships'-

"I'm here to win games, not make friends" said an old coach.

If players (possibly only a few) get bent out of shape because they don't like the coachs style, methods or what ever, they need to sort themselves out!

As has been previosly noted, a heap of top players have re-signed- things can't be all that bad!
