All the pacific nations can bring to the table is a couple of huge players and they won't be competitive in a competition like the Super 14. Just look at what happened in the Pacific Nations Cup with the Island guys.

USA on the other hand might just surprise us. And money definately aint a problem over there when it comes to sport. Imagine they enter a team and end 5th or 6th in their first year. What an uproar that will be!

they are slowly starting to enter the international arena and they are even more full of fire after the World cup

I think the pacific nations teams would do well in an expanded Super14. They'd be competitive (more so than PNC) against the more diluted Super14 teams I think.. They'd get more cash from Super n involvement which may help them retain players year round also...

I understand what you are saying Coach I just think that bringing the USA into the Super arena might just add a new dimention to it all. Imagine the playing at the USA rugby headquaters in Colorado.

Screwy time zone though - the Warriors had a quarterback named Colt Brennan, that experts regarded as the best in the country, a couple of years ago but most people in the US hadn't seen him cos they were already in bed by the time he played.

Yes, oh yes, there is a tendency for the East to overlook Western teams, especially Hawaii - it's a 6 hour time difference between New England (home of ESPN) and Oahu. However, Californians, being only 3 hours ahead of Hawaii, were very familiar with Colt Brennan. I watched him shread the Fresno State defense for almost 600 yards 2 years ago. But more to the point:The West Coast, especially California, is a hotspot for U.S. Rugby. Check out the lineup for those All Americans touring New Zealand -something like 13 are from California schools. A 3pm game in Oahu would air at 6pm here - which is great for us - not sure how it would work for the rest of the Super 14 fan base though. Still a franchise in Hawaii opens up a potential 50+ million people to the Super 14, from Northern Mexico to Alaska. Definitely deserves some consideration within the next 10 years.... i think...

I'm already working on my second TWF blog article, which is going to be about the University of California rugby team

I think the US may be unlikely for this initial 15th franchise (especially as they're talking about it happening before any new television deal kicks in) but they'd have to be favourites for inclusion in the next phase of expansion.

could you imagine the travel for the game the players would need a two week bye to get over it, defeats the object a little dont you think. On the other hand look at what the game could do for the development of rugby for Tonga, Fiji etc. And a nice introduction for them to join in the tri nations down the track.

Meanwhile on Saturday night, Channel 7 Melbourne will be showing The Princess Diaries instead of the Bledisloe.

It's this type of mindset (if it aint AFL it aint footy) which is why Melbourne should never be given a super rugby license.

7 is in the game to stop any other station from broadcasting live rugby simple as that.

Ah, I can't pick one - as long as it's not West Sydney I'll be happy!

It'll come down to whoever puts forward the strongest case (like Perth did over Melbourne, 4 years ago )
