The punting competition seems to be in a dead heat. If Rocca can improve his hang time, here's betting the Aussie gets the nod.


Punter/holder. Sav Rocca or Dirk Johnson? After two games, the competition is too close to call, but the feeling here is that Rocca will emerge as the winner.

Good from long distance
After missing his first field-goal attempt of the preseason, from 43 yards Monday night in Baltimore, David Akers rebounded last night by nailing a 52-yarder in the first quarter. Sav Rocca was the holder on the long field goal, and there have been rumblings for a while that the Pro Bowl kicker is more comfortable with the rookie Australian holding than he is with veteran punter Dirk Johnson.
Publicly, Akers has said he needs to convert all his attempts, regardless of who is holding.

Asked during the week if the Eagles planned to audition any holders besides Rocca and Johnson, special-teams coach Rory Segrest said no.

In the second half last night, Akers booted a 51-yard field goal with Johnson holding.

Looks like Sav has the edge. If Akers (who is one of the top Field Goal kickers in the league) likes him better that is a huge plus for Sav.

The minimum salary is $850,000. Mat McBair another Aussie kicker signed a 5 year $8.5 million contract including a $2.5 million signing bonus. Not bad for playing a total of less than 60 seconds a game.
