Police probe Friend over alleged assault
28th June 2009, 14:00 WST
Sydney Roosters hooker Jake Friend is being investigated by police for allegedly assaulting a woman at a Sydney nightclub on Sunday morning.
Friend, who was banned for two weeks by the NRL and fined $10,000 by his club for a high-range drink driving charge earlier this year, is alleged to have punched a woman at the Tank nightclub in Bridge Lane.
The alleged victim is 31-year-old Brisbane woman Kristy Bradley, the niece of respected ABC rugby league radio commentator David Morrow and sister of former NRL player Nick Bradley.
The incident was viewed by several members of Morrow's family who had earlier celebrated the 21st birthday of Morrow's daughter at Easts Leagues club.
The family has provided statements to police.
Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce is assisting police with their investigations.
The incident comes just days after Friend was fined $850 and banned from driving for 18 months for his drink driving offence.
The Roosters are believed to have celebrated their drought-breaking 19-12 win over Cronulla back at their leagues club with several players heading out to continue celebrations.
Only last week head coach Brad Fittler fined himself $10,000 for an alcohol indiscretion at the team hotel ahead of their NRL clash with North Queensland in Townsville.
It is yet another disturbing case of player misbehaviour in the NRL following the infamous Manly season launch after which star fullback Brett Stewart was charged with sexual assault.
