WITH apologies to the Honey Badger, it was hardly like a rat up a drainpipe.
The inaugural running of the mascots race at the North Harbour Rays’ first home NRC game proved less than ideal.
First Tah Man pulled out of the race, then the Warringah Rat pulled a hamstring mid-sprint — and lost its strides.
The half-time sprint — held during the Rays v NSW Country Eagles clash at Brookvale Oval on Thursday night — was set to feature Tah Man, but ESPNscrum reports that the NSW Waratahs’ mascot didn’t have his suit and was a late scratching.
The race eventually took place between the Warringah Rat, the Mac Warrior and the Gordon Highlander.
The Rat hit the lead on the turn and looked to be flying, only to spectacularly collapse with victory in sight.
