The ole thing is a very old soccer thing, which caught hold in the 1995 RWC in South Africa; it's become their thing as it is very effective to use during the haka.
Going back to the French suggestion I made, of clapping the home teams kicks at goal, I've heard the odd comment from a few Froggie mates of mine that it helps calm the nerves and gives a bit rhythm to the kicker, don't know if that's true, but might be worth a try.
Continuing the French tip, could we go that far wrong by chanting "Allez le Bleus?"

I hope they have changed that chant from the last game. the voice over the speakers was embarrassingly crap.
May the FORCE be with you!
I'll second that ....
I was there with my son and Dorkland was most unpleasant before, during and after the semi-fnal and the final. It was so bad a number of the more mature/intelligent kiwis apologised to us for the behaviour of some of the yobs (of both genders). Banter is fine. Hostility is not.
Some of my friends were literally spat on by kiwis at the RWC. Truly shocking.
