He was sitting on an advantage, wasn't he? It's a common ploy.

Wtf does that mean rick, "sitting on an advantage", it was a stupid waste of time, like penalty kicks in trials...

Whether we like it or not the reality is that some games are won on drop goals and they need to be practiced under match conditions as much as anything else. The fact that he had advantage at the time meant it was the perfect opportunity for a practice punt - if he missed it would come back for the penalty. If the tables were turned and it was our lads under the same circumstances, I'm sure we would have cheered.

In a trial match kicking the drop goal is similar to kicking one when you need to score 4 to win

walker wont be in the starting back 3..

Walker is behind Latham, Shifcofske and Digby, it could also be argued that they might put Hynes on before Walker as well.

As for the drop goal thing, well it needs to be practiced under match conditions, everone can whinge that its pointless, but im sure no one was complaining when he took those drop goals in the RWC last year.

Ahhhhh but if you need 4 to win and kick a drop goal at least you escape with a draw

not that i'm defending it though considering it was still pretty early (about 5-10 mins before half time wasnt it????)

I'm not a big fan of trials that aim to be a cross between barbarians rugby and beach touch, where everyone wants to hog the ball and perform heroic individual glory moves that catch the coach's eye.

For me, the best trials should prepare players for the real games ahead, and the best way to do that is play the way they aim to play in the real games -- penalty kicks and all.

Against the Reds, I was pleased to see the Force playing a tight, structured game with accurate and effective tactical kicking, even under the new rules. They're off to South Africa now and after playing the Sharks at a very humid sea level, they travel to Johannesburg (1753m above sea level) and Bloemfontein (1,395m above sea level) where a kicked ball goes into orbit before returning to earth, and a tactical kicking game against giant SA packs will serve them very well.

Hopefully their trials will have them well on track before they get there and give them the perfect start to the season.

What a load of ...Trials are inevitably an exercise in match fitness, and the more you concentrate on getting match fit, the better you are for the effort...Stopping play for three or four minutes to take a shot at goal helps no-one, and field goals are similarily not going to be of any real benefit for the attacking team, who could be concentrating on working plays or rolling mauls, ie going for the tries and getting fitter and stronger and Matchfit...Unless your idea of a trial is catching practise from the kick-offs or goal kicking practise then i can't see why you'd bother running around at all then...

The rest of your comments however are excellent though mate, regarding tactical kicking, and the way altitude effects the flight of the ball...

Let me clarify that this is not a personal attack either, i just have a strong opinion thats all, so if anyone thinks i have gone too far i apologise...

Jesus, good manners from a prop. Next thing you know, Frank Sammut will be telling me that Perth-Bayswater DESERVED to beat Palmyra in last year's preliminary final.

Don't sweat it, Frontrow. All's fair in love, war and rugby.

    Your shout though.

Ok, fair enough mate, if we ever have a run-in i will shout you, and argue the merits of keeping the ball in play in trials...All's fair...
