I hope the ARU scrubs our marque and replaces it with 4 development players. They'd all come here busting a gut having been given an opportunity to play international rugby that they for some reason they don't see at home.Like all foriegners they'll love Perth and will want to stay and not want to run back east to their mums after 3 years because Perth is too far away-poor luvs.
For mine, while having some more marquee players would be nice, it is ultimately only a short term fix that will do little or nothing for long term competitiveness. It is implicit that we would get in some expats to fill gaps in the team until someone can be developed to replace them. Without a clear strategy to address that last step, it is simply a waste of money.
In that respect, it may be coincidental but it seems to me the U-20s has thrown our deficiencies into high relief. The bulk of the players from other countries will be playing in open competition in the ITM cup/Currie cup/Aviva premiership/Magners league etc. The Australian side by comparison has a couple of guys with undeniable talent on the edge of Super rugby, and the rest are isolated in academies playing and training solely amongst themselves in a continuation of school rugby. We ruthless throw them right into the paddling pool, we do...
So, for mine, if it can't or isn't going to be an ARC-style of competition where they can play against professionals rather than kids and amateurs, then the ARU needs to backflip on the Academy structure. They've decided that more money can be spent on players but the teams have to find it themselves - fine, extend the principle and allow the teams to also find up to $400k for an EPS and let them have as many players in it as they like. Let each of the teams have 20 kids on $20K each to allow them to train professionally under the supervision of professionals. It wouldn't be as good as a competition, but it beats them all having no alternative to a Toyota cup offer but to toil away unnoticed in amateur club rugby. The only proviso I would add is that contracts should be a maximum 1 year, to enable those with the skills the chance to move as necessary for an opportunity. I'd also consider a signing bonus when they do make the grade, spread proportionately to the teams that developed them and encouraging teams to develop their own.
I think the Force should be allowed to sign up to 5 foreign development players into the main squad and as many as they like in the EPS... There are plenty of young saffas out there looking for a change, and given they are development players, it stands to benefit Australia in the long term anyway.
Im not a huge fan of the marquee player since these players usually command large salaries and have no future in representing the Wallabies, i still believe these should be restricted to 1 per team.
