I can't believe all the props didn't jump on this one straight away! The scrum is pivotal in the game of rugby. It typifies the games as a contest for the ball, What is more rugby than getting every big fat bugger on the field and trying to push the other team off the ball! It's just part of the history of the game, without the scrum the game would be far less! The first (of many) reasons (only one of which I'll share) is that it ensures all body types are able to play the game. Without the scrum, we don't need our props to be strong, If you take away the requirement of strength, the Super Heavyweights, just can't run fast enough to keep up with the wingers! If you take them away and replace them with flankers (who are still pretty strong but can keep up with the wingers) the Little blokes who normally play halfback are just gunna get smashed all their lives, so we need to replace them with Bigger guys who can break some of those tackles, Ryan Cross would be good! all of a sudden you've gotten rid of the extremes, and it will continue until (like league) everyone is the same size and shape!
