Stirling Times Opinion.
Dear Sir/Madam,
I have just read your opinion about the State playing ball with Subiaco Oval and would like to point out some views.
1.The followers of the rectangle codes are tax and rate payers too and are entitled to their own stadium up to the standard that other states and countries enjoy. You cannot watch a game of Rugby or Football on a oval stadium, as displayed by the supporters of the Force who have voted with their feet and have stayed away this season because of the poor views from the stands .
2.The AFL are not the only sport that raises revenue for the state in taxes ,and the fact that the Western Force have to pay rent to the WAFC on a stadium that was built with public money is confusing .The revenue that the Force have paid to the WAFC has probably contributed to keeping AFL in the black.
3. If a new all purpose stadium is built with State money, will the other sports still have to pay WAFC to use the ground?
4. The State should stand by its commitment to contribute the millions of dollars it promised to Rugby Union as an incentive to bring the Super 14 to Perth, none of which has been forthcoming so far.
5. The overhaul of MES would cost the fraction of the cost of a new AFL Stadium( for we know that is what it will be known as )and would in the long term bring in a better rate of return for the competitions it could attract for example the FIFA World Cup, EPL clubs on tour and other such from abroad. This in turn will attract overseas interest in WA and bring in much needed foreign revenue.
6. The view from the stands at Subiaco Oval for the Rugby World Cup games in 2003 was commented on because of the poor views, and will still mean it will only get the breadcrumbs of International sport if a high quality rectangular stadium is not found in Perth. An upgrade of MES would serve this purpose at the fraction of the cost of a cathedral built to serve the religion of one code.
7. If Australia is lucky enough to win the rights to stage the FIFA World Cup do you think they will look at WA with an Oval Stadium to stage a rectangle game you are mistaken. If you are quite happy to play the Irish in some bastardised game that is played nowhere else on th planet as your only international window to the world then in the kingdom of the blinkered ,you are a prince.
8.I have always thought that Australia is suppose to look after the little guy and help them along ,but you seem to be like a bully who wants to take what the battler has fought for and take it for yourselves even though you have everything.
9. You come across in your article as a whinging child, maybe you should try being in the shoes of supporters of the other codes and see how it feels to follow sport in WA.
10 .If you are not happy that the state is not providing money why don’t WAFC buy their own ground as other sports around the world seem very capable of doing for example in the UK ,Ireland ,USA and other countries.
11. Have the WAFC really propped up grassroots football in the state , have they contributed to Football or Rugby?
I am not against AFL having their Oval ,but leave the other codes out of it and just let a little money from tax payers who also follow the other codes be used to revamp MES .Then we can be out of your hair forever and enjoy our game and you can enjoy yours.
