Queensland Reds flanker Daniel Braid will return to New Zealand rugby in July in a bid to cement a place as Richie McCaw's All Blacks back-up for the 2011 World Cup.
The New Zealand Rugby Union announced on Thursday that Braid had signed a two-year deal to play for Auckland in the domestic competition in 2010 and for the Blues in 2011's expanded Super series.
The 29-year-old has only played four Tests for New Zealand since his debut in 2002 against Wales.

He wasn't going to get another contract from the Reds anyway, they needed special concessions for this year!

It's a shame he couldn't have stayed on at the Reds. I wonder if McKenzie will try and bring back Beau Robinson. He played under McKenzie at the Waratahs, hmm maybe they will focus more on Liam Gill.
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.
Poutasi Luafutu is a flanker too isn't he?

Good luck Daniel Braid. Been inspirational at The Reds. I hope he can really push McCaw. But even if he succeeds it's all gonna end in tears, I'm afraid.![]()

Ballymore, where Reds become All Blacks
nah best wishes to him, apparently Link looked at getting the rule changed, but after a discussion with Braid it was evident he was either returning hom to New Zealand for the RWC or heading to the NH for a pension, hence he never persued the idea.
I thought this year was an extension to the rule?
Or did they talk to the ARU because that's what you have to do with every marquee contract?

No this was his second year.
he originally signed for 1 year with a clause for a 2nd year, he had picked up a northern hemisphere contract last year and was confirmed as departing the Reds, but then he tore his archilles and his contract from europe was torn up, at which point he activated his 2nd year with the Reds.
Worked out well for both parties i think
I thought I heard that the Reds had to approach the ARU over something, is that just standard procedure with any Marquee contract?
I know we had to get approval to sign another marquee, and then I think we were restricted to a #10 (or did I jump to that conclusion?)

If i was braid id go for the $$$ in europe.
i think nzru really underestimated his worth to new zealand rugby and the blues program before. reminds me a bit of hodgo in doing all the hard work that often goes unnoticed and unappreciated.
goodluck to him and i hope he doesnt get screwed by NZRU.
