NEW YORK -- The Cup gets applause.
When the gleaming gold Rugby World Cup trophy was marched through the surprisingly large crowd gathered in the lobby of the United Nations headquarters Monday morning, the clapping was earnest and sustained. If the hardware gets this kind of reception, what's going to happen when they actually start playing the games?
The ceremony -- attended by ambassadors from around the world -- was the U.S. kick-off for the RWC campaign, with dignified and, in rugby tradition, off-kilter speeches by global representatives for the sport.
Off kilter? UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made a hooker joke. That doesn't happen every day, not in this bastion of dignity and diplomacy.
