This photo was taken at a time only our parents and grandparents would remember (and of course TLH!). George was playing for Yale in 1968. Is this an illegal tackle?

Yep and now he's your President![]()

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
Well we have, since 1968 when this was taken hockey has become much more popular. There are ice rinks everywhere now and it's only a 5 minute penalty for punching someone in the face. If George was younger he'd probably lace up the skates and take to the ice instead of playing Rugby.
Then he'd probably be kicking the bloke with the blades up...
Proudly bought to you by a brewery somewhere....
Apparently he was in Mundine's dressing room lending support before last nights ritual slaughter of some unheard of Argie.
Must have been an enlightening evening considering who else was on the undercard.

How did the digit go?
Last time I saw him he nearly ate the other bloke...on a spit roast...

Larry, apart from George obviously tackling his own team mate out of the field of play, I see nothing wrong with the tackle. In those days a high tackle had to be around the throat and a punch to the head was a sign of respect and endearment.
You can't go on to rule the world being a softy, you know.
I didn't realize they wore ankle sox as an optional variant though...
Thanks FS! I didn't realize they were on the same team and off the field. It may have been a practice session. That would explain the ankle sox too.
The black & white doesn't help an old mans' eyes I know, but I think you will find they are two different jersey's.
George's has white armbands and a white collar while the opposition is all dark, a bit like life really...
Not a bad sucker punch really, doubling the thrust by pulling his head into the fist!
Gotta love the old school scrum cap too, classy!

Despite the caption, I'm not sure it's actually a punch. If it is,I'm pretty sure the opposition player felt it. If you're going to hook a guy in the nose, you don't open your arm out like that, and you put your head down to stop him from coming back at you. It could be his hand slipping off the other side of the head making it look (a little) like he's taking a gentle poke!
I know if I was going to whack the guy, I'd make sure I was gunna do the best job I could, no point in making the fight last too long, you'll only get sent off before he's bleeding!

Sorry to spoil all the fun but I doubt its from a game at all.
The proximity of the fence and no markings suggest this may be a misplaced tackle at training, or just a fun session. Not a game setting. And those white ankle sock scream "winger" to me, so it looks like one nancy-boy back having a lark with another nancy-boy back resulting in a crappy tackle attempt with a no-punch swing.
