2010 Australian Sevens Player of the Year and Emirates Western Force back, James Stannard, will be the inspiration for a new open age group Sevens Tournament to be played for the first time at Britannia Oval on Thursday.
Six teams of Year 11 and 12 students will compete in the round robin competition including regional sides from the South West and Kalgoorlie who were selected from trials held earlier in the year.
The seven a side game has increased in popularity and Australia enjoyed a strong showing at the Commonwealth Games where Stannard and fellow Emirates Western Force team mate Nick Cummins won silver medals.
RugbyWA’s Development team has decided to host the event to increase awareness of seven while also providing a representative opportunity for regional schools.
Following several seasons with the Australian Sevens side Stannard returned to Super Rugby in 2011 but has fond memories of his time in the shortened version of the game.
“Sevens is a great way to get into rugby. I’m really proud to support the tournament and can’t wait to see the teams in action, I know they’ll have a great time playing out there,” said Stannard.
Each team will compete in three games with the top four teams earning a place in the finals. The James Stannard Sevens Tournament trophy will be presented by Stannard himself at the completion of play.
