Australia A flanker Matt Hodgson is on the verge of signing a new contract with the Western Force, some welcome good news for the Super 14 club as they battle off-field divisions while preparing for next Friday's pre-season opener.
Force officials are hopeful Hodgson will put pen to paper early next week, with Hodgson one of more than a dozen Force players due to come off contract at the end of this season.
Hodgson, a former captain of the Australian Sevens moved to Perth after two injury-plagued seasons with the NSW Waratahs - and has since improved his standing in the Super 14 ranks despite some more injury worries
Seizing his opportunities in the starting XV at the back end of the 2008 season, Hodgson registered his first try and proved adept across every back row position.
The strong finish saw Hodgson break back into the Australia A and Australian Sevens teams for the first time since 2005, and assigned a leadership role for the WA side’s development tour of England, captaining the team to a 36-17 victory over Saracens Academy.
However, that tour ended in some pain, with Hodgson having to undergo surgery in England to repair a fractured cheekbone suffered in the team's horror 48-7 loss to English Premiership outfit Leicester.
