Rogers to back up for Australia A tour finale
November 21, 2006 - 10:11am
Story by: ARU
Qantas Wallabies utility Mat Rogers will return to action just 48 hours after Australia's clash with Ireland on Sunday to play in the third and final mid-week match of the Spring Tour in the Scottish Highlands city of Perth.
Rogers was named at flyhalf in John Muggleton's Australia A outfit, which will make it's final appearance of the 2006 Spring Tour against Scotland A at Perth's McDiarmid Park tomorrow night (Wed am Aus time).
The veteran of 44 Wallaby Tests replaced Stephen Larkham 28 minutes into Sunday's defeat to Ireland but is not the only Test player backing up for the Tuesday night match.
Muggleton is still to confirm his final backline reserve, however the six players he has named on the bench each played during Sunday's rain-soaked Test in Dublin.
Waratahs centre Morgan Turinui will skipper the team in his first appointment as captain of a senior Australian representative team.
Turinui will be partnered by Gene Fairbanks in the midfield, while Mitchell Chapman will make his first starting team appearance for Australia A alongside Queensland teammate James Horwill at lock.
Captain Morgan Turinui said that his team was looking to make it a successful finale for their 2006 Spring Tour campaign.
“The boys are very excited about this game and are looking to build on the performance against Ireland A in Limerick last Wednesday,” said Turinui.
“It's a special occasion for me personally having the opportunity to captain the team, but the entire team received a tremendous boost with the win last week and we're looking forward to getting back on the field to add to that effort tomorrow night.” he added.
Turinui, who has played in both mid-week games but no Test matches during the four-week tour, said that the mid-week matches had been very beneficial to the young players on the fringe of the Wallaby team.
“Obviously for the young guys it's been a valuable experience to play in these matches and experience the different conditions and style of footy in the Northern Hemisphere,” said Turinui.
“Some of the experienced Test players have also relished the opportunity to play in these matches and have stood up and shown their class at this level,” he said.
“This will be the final match of the year for most of the players in this team, so (Tuesday night's) match is like a grand final for many of the guys in that respect.
It will be the last opportunity for most of the team to show their ability at this level of the game before a World Cup year.”

Al Baxter is incredibly bad at RUgby i do not want to see him on the RUgby field. Looking foward to his retirement. Happy Drew Mitchell is there wouldn't mind seeing him in the test team instead of Gerrard.

The wallabies need a better scrum and a better foward pack, while on this subject we need a better half back( not talking about Giteau).
Better performance by the boys:
Australia A has ended its 2006 Spring Tour campaign with two wins and a loss after a resounding victory over Scotland A at Perth's McDiarmid Park tonight.
The Australians ran in six tries to three to record a convincing 44-20 win in icy conditions.
"It was a good team effort," said Wallabies coach John Connolly.
"The whole squad has trained hard and it was a deserved reward for the hard work everyone has put in."
"The whole forward pack really stood up tonight and the likes of Mark Chisholm, Stephen Hoiles, Rodney Blake and Scott Fava pressed their claims to be involved in the Test this weekend."
The match started as a tight affair, with the defence on either side operating efficiently as both teams struggled to create a clean break.
The Scots opened the scoring almost immediately when flyhalf Gordon Ross converted an attempt at penalty goal in the second minute.
The Australians answered quickly though, with Cameron Shepherd providing three points of his own to draw level in the sixth minute.
A second Shepherd penalty gave the Aussies their first lead in the 13th minute before more strong defence repelled two promising Scotland attacking raids.
The Australia A forwards dominated the set-piece battle early in the match and eventually created their own strong try-scoring chance, only to have the final pass go to ground with 15 minutes remaining in the half.
The Australians continued to dominate the territory battle, ultimately resulting in a try to giant prop Rodney Blake after strong runs from flanker Stephen Hoiles and scrumhalf Brett Sheehan.
Shepherd's conversion gave the visitors a 10 point buffer before a further try to winger Drew Mitchell stretched the lead to 15 points at the break (18-3).
The Mitchell try was a gem. Flyhalf Mat Rogers, backing up just 48 hours after Sunday's Test clash with Ireland in Dublin, threw a cut-out pass to skipper Morgan Turinui who showed impressive speed to burst through a hole and charge 30 metres down field before finding Mitchell on his outside to score in the left corner.
Holding an 18-3 lead at half time, Australia A pounced quickly in the second stanza, with flanker Stephen Hoiles again in the action, this time popping a neat inside ball to Drew Mitchell for the winger's second five pointer. Shepherd converted to make the score 25-3 after just three minutes of play.
The Scots needed to answer quickly and did exactly that, with centre Graeme Morrison crossing for a soft try in the right corner to drag the deficit back to 25-8.
Australia A quickly stole back the ascendancy with a second converted try to Rodney Blake, almost identical to his first where he barged over under a driving maul, before practically sealing the deal with a try to Cameron Shepherd in the 56th minute.
With the score at 37-8 and the Australian forwards holding an obvious advantage over the Scottish pack, it looked as if the floodgates would open.
The home side showed a glimmer of fight when hooker Scott Lawson scored adjacent to the left upright, but couldn't stop the bleeding as the Australia A backline clicked into top gear.
Brett Sheehan dived over for the team's sixth try to put the result beyond doubt with a 44-13 lead with just over twelve minutes to play.
Scotland A centre Rory Lamont burst through the tried Australian defensive line for a consolation try with eight minutes to play but in the end it was Australia A that came away with a commanding 44-20 victory.
Double try-scorer Rodney Blake was awarded man-of-the-match honours.
Australia A 44 (Rodney Blake 2, Drew Mitchell 2, Cameron Shepherd, Brett Sheehan tries; Shepherd 4 conversions, 2 penalty goals) defeated Scotland A 20 (Graeme Morrison, Scott Lawson, Rory Lamont tries; Gordon Ross conversion, penalty) at McDiarmid Park, Perth, Scotland.

Three tries, four conversions and two penalty goals!
Must have been the location that inspired the boys from the West
Great stuff to read of a Tighthead getting stuck in for Australia, must be a long time, if ever, since a Tighthead has scored a double for an Australian XV?
Fingers crossed that somewhere this has been recorded?
It is a result we "had to have" yet it doesn't take any of the focus off the generally dissapointing outcome of the Tour, regardless of the result on the weekend.
The only way they can come away with any sense of a positive outcome over the course of the Tour is to record a resounding victory over Scotland with strong forward work and a backline that really gels.
As an armchair Coach, I would be VERY tempted to reward Shepherd and Mitchell for apparently an outstanding match by putting Tuqiri on the bench this weekend and giving them a Wing each to go head to head for sixty minutes!

Kinda agree Burgs...what more does Shepherd need to do to keep his place in the 1st XV?Originally Posted by Burgs

I just have to say that I have never seen so much focus on the Australian A side from the media before. Is it more interest because there are changes to be made to the first 15 or is it some sort of crutch.....I hope it is the former but I suspect it's the latter.
This is not sour grapes it's an observation.
Just happy to be here
For me it is definately for looking to the (near) future as there are genuine Wallabies not being selected in the "1stXV" while there are glaring deficiancies and they are losing.
I agree though TEF, there is certainly more focus than ever and I can't speak for the media obviously as to their reasons/motives.
Good luck on the weekend![]()

I tell you what Burgs, I'm a nervous wee puppy about the weekends game. I know we will be playing an Australian team not at it's best but we are severly hampered by injuries too and a win would be a fantastic result giving a great moral boost to Scottish rugby and the team.
Bring it on! I have a picture in mind of a wee Haggis giving a big old Wallaby a right good back scuttle.![]()
