A champon weightlifter's surprising choice to play rugby while recuperating from a knee injury has led to Wallaroos selection after only 10 minutes at the game.
After a bone-jarring short stint for Brisbane club Wests, Melbourne Commonwealth Games gold medallist Deborah Lovely has been named in the Australian women's squad.
And although she admits she is not completely familiar with rugby's rules, the 23-year-old is considered a big chance to make the Wallaroos' proposed mid-2007 tour of New Zealand.
Lovely wants to earn selection as Australia's sole female weightlifter at the 2008 Olympics. But in the meantime, she is keen to try her hand at rugby "for a bit of fun".
Lovely made an impression on debut for Brisbane Wests. The first three women she tackled were taken off injured - then she saved what appeared to be a certain try.
