THERE is a golden hue to Australian Rugby at the moment – and it isn’t just the glow coming off the Wallabies jerseys.
Since the arrival of new Qantas Wallabies head coach Robbie Deans, a mere three weeks ago, Rugby in Australia has been enjoying something of a honeymoon period. The erudite Kiwi has become an honorary citizen in very short time and he’s been running his charm offensive up and down the east coast.
Whether it’s delighting 1000-plus crowds with colourful banter at the Weary Dunlop lunch in Melbourne, signing autographs and posing for photos with new fans at the Wallabies Fan Day in Sydney or taking time out for some personal kicking tuition with Wallaby scrumhalf Luke Burgess – Deans, it seems, has the Midas touch.
Suddenly local Rugby fans, whose stocks were very low after that disastrous day in Marseille last October, are looking at the world with a much rosier complexion.
And why not ? There were some very positive moments in the Wallabies hard fought win over a tenacious Ireland in Melbourne and from the extraordinary performance of Australia A at North Sydney Oval against Tonga last Sunday, spearheaded by one Timana Tahu, there is a lot of very healthy competition for Test spots.
