WA “deserves” at least $100 million in federal funding towards Perth’s new high-tech sports stadium, according to Premier Colin Barnett.
After a series of successive blows, the WA Liberals rolled out some positive news today, revealing the luxurious surroundings Perth sports fans can expect when the new stadium is completed in 2018.
The stadium will include around 1000 television screens, as well as two super screens at least 20m by 12m in size, Wi-Fi access, mobile phone quiet zones and at least 10 mobile phone recharging stations.
And to help pay for it all, Mr Barnett wants Canberra to assist with the $1 billion cost, with the case already put to Opposition leader Tony Abbott when he visited the Burswood site last weekend.
“Tony Abbott did say he was supportive of it, but there was no firm commitment,” Mr Barnett said.
“I would hope the Commonwealth would contribute 10 per cent, which would be about $100 million. They have made similar contributions in Sydney, to the MCG and every other stadium - why not WA?
“I think we deserve at least that.”
A 2000 page document, containing a list of specifications, has been handed to the three consortia vying to build the new sports venue, which will also include a premium Field Club to allow fans to watch home team players warming up.
Players are also in for a luxury experience, with facilities including four six-person plunge pools, as well as two 12-person hot tubs.
Two of the warm-up rooms will also have the capacity for use as an indoor cricket practice facility.
The consortia have until mid-December to submit a fully costed response. The successful consortium will be selected by June next year.

Education is Important, but Rugby is Importanter!
Abbott has pledged $5million to the Broncos, so why not chuck in a few mill to WA? Oh that's right, statistically WA means zip in terms of fed election outcomes so not worth buying any votes here![]()

I'd like to see the Feds tell Barnett to get stuffed just to see the hissy fit he will have
Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, but I think WA has a traditionally very strong liberal vote in elections, so it is more a case that there aren't that many votes to buy here for Abbot anyway.
If we had a lot more marginal seats you would see the promises of $$$ rolling in!
You are absolutely right MM - our population isn't big enough for WA's share of the national vote to make any difference so there is no point in doing any pork barrelling over here. I mean, usually the election is decided even before the polls close over here! And with a population about equal to western Sydney, it's easy to understand why I guess :-(
Even if all our seats were marginal, I still don't think it would make a lot of difference most of the time.

also marty was right in that WA is a traditional liberal heartland.
if there was a sudden swing towards the greens or labour you'd get a lot more abbot time over there.
Swingers? There's a Swingers Party as well as the Sex Party?! Who knew politics was such fun!![]()

Or, put another way, they would like the Federal government to kick in more for an AFL ground in WA than the state government was prepared to spend in total on a ground for both rugbies and soccer....
