A MALAYSIAN referee took out his gun and fired warning shots in the air after a local soccer match turned unruly following the suspension of a player, according to a local newspaper report.
The referee, who was also a policeman, ran to his patrol car to get his gun after players mobbed him for showing the red-card to one of them, the New Straits Times said.
"We are investigating as to whether the policeman was justified in taking out his firearm and discharging it, and also why he had it with him during the match," it quoted Hussin Ismail, police chief in the southern Johor state, as saying.
The policemen was taken into custody for suspected misuse of firearms.
Five players, aged between 23 and 40, were also being held for questioning and could be charged for rioting, the paper said.
Now there's something Rugby WA could consider.....
What's the big deal he shot into the air!

stray bullet may have hit a bird flying overhead......very bad..
Well he didn't really... It was in his car.Originally Posted by Reuters

I think the problem here is that the shooting may have excited the refs guide dog, which in turn may have bitten someone...
Proudly bought to you by a brewery somewhere....
Ecky referees soccer too?

what a ledgend
Can you imagine refereeing somethng as boring as soccer? The biggest decision to make is whether the player was actually "tackled" with sufficient force to send him tumbling for several metres while clearly sustaining a life-threatening multiple bone fracture to the leg. (Which can be miraculously healed by application of The Magic Sponge)
No, me neither. So I stick to rugby.
Besides, what's the point of showing a yellow card if you ain't going to send the player from the field for a while?
...or a Red if you don't want to actually shoot them![]()
