AUSTRALIA star George Smith is the latest big name player to be sounded out by French rugby.
Smith was due to have a meeting with Toulon rugby club president Mourad Boudjellal overnight, according to French sports paper L'Equipe.
The club controversially recruited league's Sonny Bill Williams in the middle of his contract with the Bulldogs.
Smith, 28, signed a three-year deal with the ACT Brumbies in 2006 that took him through to the 2009 season.
He was reportedly due to visit Toulon's stadium and meet club directors with a view to a contract starting next June.
At least two other French clubs, Brive and Clermont, have expressed an interest in signing him.
The interest in Smith follows Bayonne's $9.6m offer to Wallaby teammate Matt Giteau.
Smith stood in for concussed Stirling Mortlock as Australia's captain in their 18-11 win over the star-studded Barbarians at Wembley last week.
He was man of the match in the historic clash that marked 100 years since Australia's Olympic gold medal for rugby in London.
The veteran of 96 tests, Smith was this week named a nominee for the Rugby Union Player's Association 2008 Medal of Excellence, which he won last year. He has already been named Brumbies player of the year, the Australian Super 14 player of 2008 and was awarded the John Eales Medal.
