Crusaders coach Robbie Deans has extended his contract with the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) and the Crusaders to 2008 with an option for 2009, it was announced today.
Deans has led the Crusaders to four Super 14 titles and six final appearances in his eight seasons as coach.
NZRU Deputy Chief Executive Steve Tew said the Union was delighted to have retained the services of Deans, the competition’s most successful coach, as he was a key coaching asset within New Zealand rugby.
“While New Zealand has been recognised for its playing depth in recent years, it is equally important to have depth and experience in our coaching ranks.”
Mr Tew said the effort to re-sign Robbie Deans had been a cooperative one involving the NZRU and the Crusaders.

Those Cantabs are pretty loyal really. Wonder how much they had to pony up to resign Deans, guess it was a large cheque with "write your own amount in".
There is still an out for him to Coach at International level so it's not over yet...

I can't say I'm surprised really.
Knuckles must be over the moon! One less non Aussie in the running.
I made Happy sad...
Sorry, but Wallabies = a Aussie coach. Deans or whoever have the cred but i wouldnt think a overseas Coach would go down too well with Joe Public. Its our backyard so lets look after it. I like the idea of Muggleton getting the gig, even though he has a mungo background.
the punters friend..... stick with me and you will be wearing
It's a July thread folks, there is more recent media stating he is still in the running for either International appointment.
Muggles fully deserves to maintain his current role but he isn't a National Coach.
If he is available it would make as much sense to knock back Deanes as it would have to knock back Mitch for the Force, he is head and shoulders in front of any other in the running and has the perfect pedigree for sustained development towards a New Zealand World Cup.

It aint going to happen Burgs. Deans would go down like a fart in a spacesuit with the crew from NSW and Qld, if he was appointed i think. Mind you if he has the cojones and is accepted, i wouldnt complain. I just cant see it happening.

Direct from France......the inside scoop from the Coaches selection committee
There will not be a new coach......
It will be a Coaching "Team"...
Scott Johnson
Michael Foley
John Muggleton
There will be a Manager appointed to co-ordinate the team and that may be Scott Johnson.
Scott Johnson has stipulated that if he is appointed as Manager that compulspory "suits" will be scrapped and coaching staff uniform will be camoflage cargo pants and mullet haircuts.
Foley is understood to be upset with the haircut clause and is seeking advice from Advanced Hair Institute.
Cool coaching by committee, there's the Wallabies rooted for the next year. To a certain degree they need someone from outside the NSW/QLD power block imho, too much old school for mine. What's Mitchell's plans re International leavelOriginally Posted by Unnamed Sauces

5 year contract with the Force, and his announcement sounded pretty serious. I think he wants to do a Deans with Perth and thinks he's got the goods to get what he wants. Once Force are consistently top two, I think he'll look International again, but that's just my gut talking. It kinda makes sense that he take the team to their potential and then use that to pad out a CV which doesn't really represent his skills with the dumping by the Allblacks.
