FATTER contract offers to play in Melbourne or Perth would not buy the tight "whatever it takes" teamwork that rising hooker James Hanson has re-signed for at the Reds.
Hanson yesterday ended the guessing game on his future by finalising a new one-year deal.
The high workrate forward believes the Reds' winning environment is the best way to advance his rugby while he will keep pursuing opportunities in the business sector and studies at the University of Queensland.
Hanson, 23, knows the magnitude of the Reds beating NSW on Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium - even before dreaming of the four-try bonus point that may be necessary to sneak into the Super Rugby playoffs.
"Any time you play the Waratahs for a finals spot or otherwise, it's full-on and winning is first and foremost," said Hanson, a product of the Reds' new golden period since 2010. "The Highlanders were hammering our tryline for the final 10 minutes last Friday night and any hole for a try might have meant our season over.
"Instead, we kept them out with that whatever-it-takes attitude that shows the tightness of this team."
"Chibba" Hanson earned his nickname from his old Nudgee Junior College teacher Paul Smith, who likened him to a squat little sumo puppet in a Japanese television show. He is now 105kg of compact power.
"People ask me why would you re-sign while (Wallaby hooker) Saia Faingaa is at the Reds?" Hanson said.
"It would have been the easy way out to go elsewhere to get the No.1 job ... Saia and I both challenge each other to do better and I know, in the long run, this is the best place to improve as a footballer."

Hah. The Force only expressed interest in Hanson in case Charles didn't re-sign. You can't carry three hookers in a 30 man squad. I personally think we are better off.
50 says Hanson will end up at the Rebels in 2014.
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.
Good to see another good young player remain within the squad, technically he is a wallaby although he never actually made it onto the field in that Samoan embarrassment last year..
His scrummaging is stronger then Faingaa's, and he is technically very good in rucks and mauls.. He has a long career at the Reds ahead of him.
Black.
how is he a wallaby?
Technically he isn't a Wallaby if he didn't make it onto the field.
"It would have been the easy way out to go elsewhere to get the No.1 job"
Sir does sound a little bit full of himself.
"Bloody oath we did!"
Nathan Sharpe, Legend.
James Hanson is not a player who is full of himself, he is a very grounded and intelligent player.. Can't blame him for repeating a message which was sent to him, it wouldnt surprise me at all to see another team offering him the starting position.
So the Reds are controlling the media now as well?

Good to see QLD retaining their home grown talent
It would be nice to see a sandgroper step out of the wilderness and earn a contract
dead set
Controversy corner
how's little Tommy shaping up?
InnFORCEr and Happy, you were both rather insistent that it was a "fact" that Harris had re-signed with the Reds for 2013... Maybe you can elaborate on this comment from Link for the rest of us then?McKenzie revealed yesterday that Queensland were likely to lose only one player from this year's squad, Melbourne Rebels-bound Scott Higginbotham.
With James Hanson recently re-signed, utility backs Mike Harris and Ben Tapuai are the only players left uncontracted.
McKenzie said negotiations were going well with the pair and he was not worried about the outcome.
"We have been talking to Harris and Tapas (Tapuai) for a long time, it's all good," he said.
"You recruit 12 months of the year."
Most Reds players have shunned larger offers to remain at Ballymore.
The core group are set to stay together until the end of 2015.
"Even though we won the title last year we are all hanging together and only one has left," McKenzie said.
"The core group has stayed for the right reasons. They are there for the long haul and they play like that on the field.

You mean like K Bomb, Ryan Tyrell, Justin Turner, DHP and probably Kyle G. Probably count Chuck in there as well. I'd like to see more but having that many is about what I would have hoped for in the first 5 years. The wise men from the east would have predicted none. Hopefully Zac Holmes will be interested in returning when his ACT contract is up and the Force turns things around.
"The main difference between playing League and Union is that now I get my hangovers on Monday instead of Sunday - Tom David
I thought Ben T had signed for the love of the jersey and team song as soon as he got off the plane from Perth?? Or have I got the wrong martyr?
I like the 'fact' you still doubt us .. see what I did there
TIF and I know he's been signed, sauces will remain unnamed, that's the whole idea of the person who told us, to share info without names.
that pretty much says it allMcKenzie said negotiations were going well with the pair and he was not worried about the outcome.
"We have been talking to Harris and Tapas (Tapuai) for a long time, it's all good," he said.
there are very clever reasons why it hasn't been announced but the 'fact'remains he has signed with the REDS![]()

Chuck Norris has the greatest Poker-Face of all time. He won the 1983 World Series of Poker, despite holding only a Joker, a Get out of Jail Free Monopoly card, a 2 of clubs, 7 of spades and a green #4 card from the game Uno.
