The HSBC Waratahs have secured the services of Dean Mumm until the end of 2009, the talented young lock signing a new two year deal this week.
A graduate of the NSW Waratah Academy, Mumm this year made his Super 14 debut in the Waratahs week one victory over the Lions in Johannesburg.
He would eventually play 12 matches for the year, missing just one through injury.
He capped a fine debut Super Rugby season with a runaway try in the final round win against the Hurricanes in Wellington, his first at this level.
"We threw Dean in the deep end to a certain extent this season and his performances justified the faith shown in him," HSBC Waratahs head coach Ewen McKenzie said.
"With Dan Vickerman and Al Kanaar out for the season there was plenty of pressure on Dean and he passed with flying colours.
"He's been in the system for a few years and he's an example to others of what hard work can achieve."
23-year old Mumm made his NSW debut on the 2004 development tour to Argentina after a season with the Waratah Academy.
He also toured Eastern Europe in 2005 and the UK & Ireland in 2006, captaining the Waratahs to victory in the 2006 development tour opener against Saracens A.
A two-time Tooheys New Cup winner with Sydney University, with whom he has proven equally proficient at lock and blindside flanker, Mumm has also represented Australia at U16, Schoolboy, U21, Universities and Barbarians levels.
He also captained the Kings School first XV in 2001 & 2002, leading the school to the GPS title in his second year at the helm.
