As England still reverberates with dissatisfaction over the Mark Cueto non-try ruling in the World Cup final on 20 October, Aussie ref Stuart Dickinson has leapt to his own defence.
The controversial Aussie whistle-blower, who made the fateful decision in his role as video ref over Cueto's slide into the corner in the second half of the final won 15-6 by the South Africans, remains adamant he made the right call.
With Cueto afterwards declaring he "knew" it was a try, and his English team-mates expressing general unhappiness with the tight decision going against them, the no-try ruling has caused a furore in England.
But Dickinson – no stranger to controversy after being the subject of a public tirade from French coach Bernard Laporte in New Zealand earlier this year – is adamant he got it right. In fact, he said review of the movement after the match had only firmed his belief.
"I am 100% happy with the decision," Dickinson told the Daily Telegraph newspaper. "There is a lot of definitive footage there. Factually it is indisputable."
"Of course the players are disappointed. If they weren't, you would be disappointed in them as elite athletes."
Added the experienced Australian official: "His foot runs into touch by about 25 to 30 centimetres. If you know the decision is correct and people are still upset, well there is nothing you can do about that is there?

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

lol does johnny get his knighthood (or whatever it was) taken off him now?
I'm not so sure, it's difficult to tell from this angle, are we absolutely sure that it is Cuetos foot, it looks like the foot of the Safa sliding in and blocking the view of Cuetos foot. I don't know how Dickinson can sleep at night .... I can't
" Jonny Wilkinson ... still the only man to score in two... Yes two world cup finals"
Simple answer: Look at the scoreboard - no tries were scored in the match. So it can't have been a try.
Bear in mind that the line itself marks the start of the thing it denotes. Meaning that, if a part of the ball touched the line that marks the goal line, then it is in-goal and , therefore, a try. So, if a foot - or part thereof - touches the paint that marks the touch line, then it is in touch.
I wasn't so sure he made the right call before... but that looks pretty good to me.![]()
I made Happy sad...
Its funny how much you see them rattle on about it in all of the English newspapers after routinely condemning New Zealand as poor sports and sour pusses when the moaning started about the missed forward pass (which in fairness was definitively forward). How they were cheated because Dickinson was an Aussie, about how Cueto 'knew' it was a try- definitely a try (even though he couldn't see his own feet, and about how the match would have been completely over and England would have won if that try was scored. Another case of the pot calling the kettle All Black. Sorry I couldn't resist.
NO TRY. Certainly not.
Success is not final, failure is not fatal:
it is the courage to continue that counts.

No try for me. CLEARLY the foot is on the line - sorry Wilko. Didn't know the English knew how to get down that end of the pitch.....
