'compassionate release'- hope that's an ass-covering phrase for the ARU rather than dramas for the Elsoms.
Inside Rugby sort of said it was cause he wanted to stretch his wings a bit - been in the Tahs since he left school (is this correct ? Yo Chook where r u ?)
Doesn't sound like he needs much compassion - however they seem to think he'll be back in time for season 2009 !
61 years between Grand SlamsWas the wait worth it - Ya betta baby
not quite. He spent a bit of time in League, playing for the Bulldogs Premier League (ie: reserve grade) teams and was due for a start in First Grade when they bought Sonny Bill Williams. End of story for Rocky @ da doggies.
Then he went to the tahs.
I like Elsom, I think he is a quality player and while he is not in the limelight as being the best player on the face of the earth, I think he does a fair few subtle things that helps to keep the team going. Although in his absence it could make a big difference in giving other blokes a go and getting some experience under their belts.
I wonder if TOCC will object if I laugh??
Ha............ha.............ha!!!

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
oohh... biiiiigggg loss for the tahs! i rate elsom... thatll b a blow to the tahs 'champions' campaign![]()
A kick in this game is like a rather nasty alcoholic shooter, only as good as it's chaser...

if Vickerman leaves as well, it'll be a tough year for the tahs. You all saw how much we struggled after losing Whitaker.
ARU to release Elsom after Tri-Nations
AAP - June 26, 2008, 7:12 pm
Australian Rugby Union chief John O'Neill insists Rocky Elsom is a one-off and that he will not be releasing players from their contracts willy-nilly so they can pursue big-money deals in Europe.
O'Neill announced that the ARU had granted Elsom a release on "compassionate grounds", freeing up the star flanker to link with Irish club Leinster in September, three months before his contract was due to expire.
O'Neill, though, was eager to allay fears that the decision would set a dangerous precedent and spark a mass exodus of Wallabies to Europe, just as a glut of All Blacks - including superstar flyhalf Dan Carter - were embarking on similarly lucrative sabbaticals.
"On each and every occasion, the compassionate grounds have to be genuine and well argued," O'Neill said.
"We're not in the business of artificialising (sic) or being part of an artificial arrangement.
