Whilst I cant profess to have the same feeling of the water of TEF. I can tell you I have this strange feeling of deja vue about this weekend.
It was a sunny day in May 1979.
The Waratahs were spruking through the press about their devine right to Wallaby spots and the upcoming game against Queensland was a mere formality.
The Waratahs boasted a lot of stars and some up and coming backs by the name of Ella and Wright who were predicted to run circle around the Queenslanders.
Queensland got off to a great start and through the 3 soon after dubbed "the holy trinity" of Paul McLean (now ARU Pres), Mark Loane (ex hubby of Sally Loane of SMH repute and a Doctor of Opthamology) and Tony Shaw (dad of a kid who the Force should pick up) the Queenslanders ground the Waratahs into dust.
Late in the second half whenever Queensland got a penalty the ball was thrown to McLean who put up the biggest up and under kick (Gary Owen) and the Queensland pack - who were poohooed as being below Wallaby standard poured through and scored time after time.
With a few minutes to go...the score was Queensland 48 Waratahs 10.
And a chat came from the hill
GIVE US 50! GIVE US 50!
While they didnt get 50 it was a milestone in Queensland rugby history and from there they went on to dominate Australian Rugby for many years.
So.....on Saturday night....in the watershed of Force history...if we get close to the mark. Look for a fat old guy in section 105 and start yelling..
GIVE US 50!
