New Lansdowne Road to be called the Aviva Stadium
Thursday, 12 February 2009
The new Lansdowne Road Stadium is to be known as Aviva Stadium
Hibernian Aviva has secured the naming rights for the new showpiece stadium in a deal that could be worth almost 50m ($78 million according to todays West Australian) over ten years.
Meanwhile the first game at the new venue will be a rugby match in August 2010 - there is no word yet on who'll be playing in the fixture.
The 2011 UEFA cup final is already scheduled for the stadium and the IRFU is also to bid for the 2011 Heineken Cup Final.

I read somewhere else that the money would be for the benefit of both Rugby and Soccer

ah i believe something like the Irish Football Association? are joint owners for the next 10years or something like that. It was done like that to fund the stadium, after 10 years it will revert back to just IRU as sole ownership.
Yeah to them - financially secure brilliant - they have also sold a lot of seats for 10 years and have sponsorships etc.. in place to - just as well given that the Celtic Tiger is now extinct or in hock depending on who you talk too.
61 years between Grand SlamsWas the wait worth it - Ya betta baby
well unfortunately it is a sign of the times where the dollar (or the pound or the euro) is the most important thing
I keep calling ANZ Stadium in Sydney "Stadium Australia" as it was known when first completed for the Olympics, I still call Aussie Stadium in Sydney "Sydney Foortball Stadium" or "SFS", Suncorp Stadium would still be Lang Park to most Queenslanders
Apparently Jade Stadium is referred to as something else by the locals. Whats stopping you from referring to the ground as Lansdowne Road. I assume most of the Rugby supporters world wide and in Ireland will still refer to the ground as that
well actually Suncorp's naming rights on 'Lang Park' comes up for renewal at the end of this year, so its possible that it may revert back to 'Lang Park' for 2010.
Either way i dont actually give a crap to be honest, yeah you lose some of the nostalgia, but if the money is contributing back to the sport then its not exactly a bad thing.
