Gareth Jones dies after injuring neck in club match

Gareth Jones dies after injuring neck in club match
    17th June 2008, 11:30 WST

Neath scrumhalf Gareth Jones died in hospital on Monday after injuring his neck in a Premier Division match against Cardiff in April, the Welsh club said in a statement.

Jones, 28, is survived by his wife and two children.

“It is with deep regret that Neath Rugby have to announce that scrumhalf Gareth Jones passed away peacefully this afternoon,” the Welsh league champion said.

“Thoughts are with Gareth and the young family he left behind.”

Medical staff treated Jones on the pitch for around 10 minutes during the Cardiff-Neath match on April 20 and he was then transferred to hospital, where scans revealed a significant injury to his neck, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Jones had been in intensive care at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff since the incident, where he underwent surgery for his injuries and medical complications.

Cardiff centre Darren Ryan was cited over the action in which Jones was injured but the Welsh Rugby Union cleared him of reckless play.

    Thats devastating.

This is why people need to get pulled up for any dangerous tackle involving someone's neck or spine. A tackle may not harm someone once but it doesn't take much for something to go wrong.

Have you watched the video? He goes over and joins the ruck, sort of does a bit of bridging and then gets hit by a player moving into the ruck on his neck and he falls back. Not really avoidable, just a freak accident....

No I haven't seen the video.

(I dont know to word the following appropriately so your just going to have to read it as it comes)

It was a freak accident with Jones then, but when Tialata made that tackle on Dane HP in the Hurricanes match, people said he didnt mean to make such a tackle...I said if something went wrong then it could have gone horribly wrong and some people were like pfft not a chance Tialata knew what he was doing.
The incident with Jones was a 'freak accident' it could have just as easily happened with Dane.
I think intentional tackles like Tialata's deserved to be punished.

Rugby should be tough, it's not netball...Tialata was twice his size, if you pick up one of your younger cousins your not yelled at and told to put them down as you will surely drop them, people know you simply won't, this applies.

YouTube - WRN- Cardiff vs Neath- Welsh Premiership It's at 6:30 on that video.

    rugby should be tough

but what tialata did was a cheap shot and it was just to make him look big, thats not tough. I hate people that do that.
