Match of the Round: Nedlands v UWA at The Foreshore, Nedlands
Nedlands will seek a return to the winner’s list on Saturday when they host UWA for the right to hold aloft the Michael Denton Shield.
Denton, a former Nedlands flyhalf, tragically lost his life during an end-of-season trip to Bali for an International 10’s tournament in 2011. His final match for the club was the 2011 Premier Grade grand final against UWA.
As part of the occasion, Denton’s mother has flown across from New Zealand and will be on hand to present the Shield to the winning captain.
Nedlands will look to bounce back after suffering its first loss of the season to Kalamunda last week, missing out by two points (9-7) in a low-scoring affair at home.
Meanwhile, a double to UWA fullback Christian Joubert wasn’t enough to stop Wests Scarborough getting over the line by an agonising point, making it two close losses on the trot for the Students.
The season hangs precariously in the balance at two wins and four losses for Saturday’s visitors, with six bonus points keeping them in contention for the top four.
UWA coach Steve McFarland says he’s disappointed that his side has let two tight games to slip away in the past fortnight, adding extra weight to Saturday’s fixture.
“Without a doubt it’s a game that we need to play well in and get a result out of, otherwise it’s going to make things difficult for ourselves come the next couple of weeks,” he said.
“Last week against Wests we led by nine points with about two minutes to go, and you have to be able to close games like that out and we didn’t.”
Nedlands boss Tony Ball says his side has moved on from last weekend’s loss and is looking forward to the tribute match for Denton.
“For us this game means a lot,” he said. “We’re playing the game in memory of ‘Dents’, so it’s a really important game for us and we’ll give every effort we’ve got on the day,” he said.
“We’ve had a look at how Wests were able to counter UWA and we think we’ve found a few areas where we can exploit their defence.”
The Students have made a number of changes from last week’s starting line-up: prop Trevor Downs comes in alongside flyhalf Alan Kingsley. Luke Burton is a notable omission, with the playmaker in Sydney for an Australian Under 20’s training camp.
Ball has included five new faces in his starting team, with lock Josh Eden-Whatiri, wingers Nick Sutcliffe and Jake Wilson, and centre Cam Crowley all included, while Emirates Western Force squad member Locky McCaffrey joins the back row.
Nedlands: 1 Mark Davies, 2 Mason Pomare, 3 Travis Church, 4 Josh Eden-Whatiri, 5 Mike Egan, 6 Locky McCaffrey, 7 Richard Naylor, 8 Jason Pasetta, 9 Michael Ruru, 10 Fred Tuua, 11 Nick Sutcliffe, 12 Ryan McLeod, 13 Cam Crowley, 14 Jake Wilson, 15 Jayden Scorringe.

Cottesloe v Rockingham at Harvey Field, Cottesloe
The ‘Battle of Broome Street’ was run and won in convincing fashion by Cottesloe last week with the 29-10 win leaving the Gulls as the only undefeated team in 2013.
The bonus-try victory added to the seemingly unstoppable wave of momentum Ian Fowler’s men are currently surfing after six matches.
Despite sitting third from the bottom of the Pindan Premier Grade ladder, Rockingham has shown considerable form of its own; last week’s one-point win over Perth Bayswater rounded out a strong month for the club with their only loss coming at the hands of Nedlands.
Cottesloe has one forced change with Stefan Cooper replacing Ollie Hoskins, who is away on Australian Under 20 duty, while Rory Crowhen returns to the back row.
Rockingham has made changes in the form of hooker Mark Royal and second rower Eric Hannson, as well as a new complement of wingers in Sam Russell and Nathan Lansdale.
Cottesloe: 1 Stefan Cooper, 2 TBA, 3 Kaiser Reidy, 4 Nick Haining, 5 Adrian Hall, 6 Mark Jackson, 7 Rory Crowhen, 8 Jarrett Budworth, 9 Ryan Louwrens 10 Sean Martin, 11 Matt Richards, 12 Tobias Hoskins, 13 Ed Stubbs, 14 Ed Melville, 15 Sam Christie.

Kalamunda v Palmyra at Hartfield Reserve, Forrestfield
Kalamunda made headlines last week by stunning Nedlands in a 9-7 victory at The Foreshore.
Kalamunda – the team tipped to be the big improvers this season – find themselves sitting third on the ladder but will need to continue that form with Wests Scarborough, Associates, UWA and Palmyra all sitting within a win of the Bulls.
Palmyra’s season is back on track following a win against Wanneroo last weekend and sit at an even split of three wins and three losses after six rounds.
Five individual try scorers last week indicates ample attacking prowess for Palmyra and a strong win this weekend could see them leapfrog Kalamunda on the table.
Palmyra is yet to submit a team sheet for the clash while Kalamunda will go into the match unchanged.
Kalamunda: 1 Sui Liaga, 2 Arron Minett, 3 Benny Rumble, 4 Matt Dessauvagie, 5 Martin Asiata, 6 Kyle Skiba, 7 Lukas Birch, 8 Anare Koliavu, 9 Daniel Harris, 10 Gary Gardiner, 11Steve Komene, 12 Kane Allen, 13 Preston Elama, 14 Dane Jobe, 15 Henare Hira.

Associates v Perth Bayswater at Allen Park, Swanbourne
It may only be a short walk down the road but Associates will be happy to return home to Allen Park following a Round Six loss to leaders Cottesloe last weekend.
Soaks have struggled to find consistent performances in recent weeks and coach Andy Cole will be hoping for strong win this weekend to reignite his side’s campaign.
Perth Bayswater had a chance to grab its second win of the season last week but narrowly went down to Rockingham by a point.
'Baysie’ will need more than one avenue to points if they are to collapse Soaks this week with outside centre Dylan Timu collecting all 16 in last week’s defeat.
For Associates, Ben Hales returns to the second row while flanker Michael Hardwick has also come in. Emirates Western Force squad members Angus Cottrell and Mick Snowden have also been named.
Prop Adam Grant, lock Jesse Rapana and flyhalf Jordan Luke are all new additions for Perth Bayswater.
Associates: 1 Mike D’Adamo, 2 Scott Tolmie, 3 Andy Lawrence, 4 Ben Hales, 5 Zane Kader, 6 Angus Cottrell, 7 Michael Hardwick, 8 Pama Petia, 9 Michael Snowden, 10 Peter Du Toit, 11 Ronan Colleran, 12 Ammon Matuauto, 13 Jarek Goebel, 14 Caillan Richards, 15 Matt Dreyer.

Wests Scarborough v Wanneroo at Bennett Park, Scarborough
Wests Scarborough stole the points from UWA last week, turning a 29-10 deficit in to a 30-29 win in the dying minutes.
Five bonus points from six games has helped Wests to fourth spot on the table but the newly-located club will need to produce better than a 50 per cent winning ratio if they are to hold ambitions of playing finals this season.
Wanneroo remain winless at the bottom of the Pindan Premier Grade ladder with two bonus points all the northern club has to show after six weeks.
The changes have again been wrung in at Wanneroo with lock Salo Tutaia, flanker Alan Coulter, flyhalf Joshua Tamati, winger George Leslie and full back Romain Marti all earning starts this week.
Prop Ben Diaper, lock Josh Katene and fly half Teava TeRangi have all come in for Wests Scarborough and are accompanied by the return of centre Brylin Nichols.
Wanneroo: 1 Goliath Nikora, 2 Mark Cornell, 3 Steve Mangan, 4 Phoenix Battye/Salo Tutaia, 5 Brian Khaemba, 6 Glen Jessup, 7 Alan Coulter, 8 Sylvo Iro, 9 Jason Stewart, 10 Joshua Tamati, 11 Dallas Cameron, 12 Puli Mafi, 13 James Ross, 14 George Leslie, 15 Romain Marti.
Wests Scarborough: 1 Junior Sala, 2 Conan Houkamau, 3 Ben Diaper, 4 Riley Winter, 5 Josh Katene, 6 Thomas Goosey, 7 Kane Koteka, 8 Brad Griffiths, 9 Michael Marshal (c), 10 Teava TeRangi, 11 Allan Wheeler, 12 Brylin Nichols, 13 Brendan Anderson, 14 Sean Curd, 15 Chance Bunce.
