Growing up on a Nor-West Queensland cattle station, Richard Brown was exposed to the rough and tumble that he now thrives on from an early age.
Attending the renowned Rugby nursery, Nudgee College, Brown played for two years in the 1stXV as well as earning Queensland Under 16’s, and Queensland and Australian Schoolboys Honours.
As part of the 2001 Australian Schoolboys Brown experienced life “on the road” as a Rugby Player touring through Japan, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
Having had this early taste, Brown went on to have great sequence of seasons in 2002-04, including selection in the QAS Under 19’s (’02-‘03), Wests Colts Premiership (’02), Australian Under 21’s (’03-‘04), Queensland A (’03) and the Australian Sevens (’03-’04).
Brown was also selected in the Australian High Performance Unit in 2004 and was an Energex Reds Rugby Scholarship Recipient in 2005.
With such an impressive resume`, it was little wonder that Brown was approached by John Mitchell to become a Foundation Member of the Emirates Western Force, with his two year signing being announced on the 27th of April, 2005 as the equal seventh signing with fellow Queenslander Tai McIsaac.
As the first on the alphabetical team list, it could be argued that Brown’s attendance at the franchises first training session makes him rather than the absent Brendan Cannon the “First Force Player”!
Coming off the bench with immediate impact in the Force’s inaugural match against the Brumbies, Brown went on to record 5 starts to finish the ’06 Super 14 Season on 6 Caps.
Reward for a great season came with selection for Australia A against Fiji in August and the Prime Ministers XV to play Japan in early November ’06.
With his continued improvement during the Force Gold and APC Campaigns and a remarkable increase in muscle, 2007 is looking to be a great season for the hard-hitting “Boy from the Bush”.
