The SANZAR Board has today proposed expanding the Super 14 finals to a Top Six playoffs series next year.
Viewed as stage one in an overall plan to increase Super Rugby’s footprint across member countries South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, the recommendation came out of a three-day SANZAR workshop in Perth that concluded with a Board meeting this morning.

My interest is what comes after "stage one"![]()
Top Six Playoffs will not fix the Super 14.
It is like placing a BandAid over a broken leg.
This is not a Top Down exercise this needs to be a Bottom Up.
Each country needs an extra franchise and each countries last placed team in the S14 needs to play a relegation & promotion Tri-Game Series (Home, Away & Neutral Territory) and only after that play a Top Six Playoff.
how do the playoffs work then? i dont get it... does 1 play 2 or 6? that means another round of finals... im confused. how do six finalists narrow down to 2?
A kick in this game is like a rather nasty alcoholic shooter, only as good as it's chaser...

Or perhaps the top two teams get a rest in the first week (I've seen that backfire before...)
i tried to figure it out..
1v2- winner in final
3v6- winner in semi
4v5- winner in semi
and then the winner of the semi plays looser of 1v2 and then the winner of THAT goes into the final... thats four weeks of finals rugby man...![]()

I think that may be the case, therefore the "reward" for being 1st (and indeed 2nd) would be, as you say Beige, to have a weeks rest.
Or like this Robyn:
Week 1 Finals: 3 v 6, 4 v 5; 1 & 2 rest
Week 2 Semis: 1 v winner (3 v 6), 2 v (winner 4 v 5)
Week 3 Grand Final: Winner SF1 v SF2
It's bloody fantastic the year the Force will surely make the finals I'll be bloody overseas. God has it in for me.
